This is to confirm that Ethel Collier has agreed to tell us her story. Her story is now part of the archive. Ethel Collier fully understands the procedures.

I was born in London 1908. I always lived there, also during the war. My husband joined the army on the 13 of august 1941 and I lived alone with my tree daughters. The eldest one was evacuated in the school for three-four months and it was very hard not to see her for so long, she hated it as well. After a while we took her back home. We used to hire a bus to go and see her, we had blacken all the windows out because of the raids that were going on. I used to knit to make some money and I also made wedding dresses. When the air raid went off we used to go inside the garden shed until the all clear went off.

The middle daughter had appendicitis and my husband came to see us, after 2 years. It was Christmas time and we didn’t have any decorations so we used to draw figures. When he came, my daughter said to me: “Mummy, who is this man?”, she couldn’t recognise him after so long!

The youngest daughters went schools and they carried with them gas masks and protections.
