During rationing my Mother would buy 4d of bones (these were not counted as ‘ration’) and stew them, then pick the meat off the bones, add various vegetables and make a pie which would feed four of us. She also made quite a successful sponge cake using liquid paraffin as the fat ingredient.

We were allocated one egg per person per week and whilst my father, sister and I ate ours to ourselves she made an egg custard with hers which also fed four people.
At Christmas time ‘points’ were stored so that we could get dried fruit for Christmas cake. No almonds were available so we made marzipan with soya flour and almond essence.
