When the Germans bombed Sunderland I was one of the children evacuated to Leyburn in the Yorkshire Dales. Unfortunately, I was very small and thin so I was one of the last evacuees to be selected by the prospective foster parents - the people choosing wanted big, strong lads to work on the local farms.
