Jean Diggle

Memories from 1944 Aged 6yrs.

During the war I lived at 6 Montrose Avenue, Tonge Park, Bolton with my Mother, Father, and younger brother. We had an Anderson Shelter at the bottom of the garden, which held about six people. I remember going down into the shelter about three times with my family and an elderly lady neighbour. It was always night and I ended up going into it dressed in my nightgown. It was always cold and light by a dim electric light-bulb, although I always went to sleep.

I remember going with my mother for clothing coupons. We had to go into Bolton Town Centre, but I can’t remember where. Clothing was rationed, and you had to buy things with money and coupons. If you needed more clothing you had to ask a neighbour if they had any spare coupons.

I remember seeing aircraft going over to bomb Manchester. They were very loud. When the bombing was over, I remember sirens going off for the all clear.
