This story was submitted to the people’s War site by Holly Fuller of Leicestershire Library Services on behalf of Jill Gray and has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site’s terms and conditions. My adopted sister, Poppy Williams, who was several years older than me was blown over by a last of a bomb when she was about 8 years old. This started epileptic fits, which lasted until she was 21. Poppy was born on the 11 November, armistice day and was named by my Grandmother.

Poppy and my mother were evacuated to a naval College in Dartmouth. Poppy was spoilt by the sailors there and given sweets. My family came from Kent and lived near the Woolwich Dockyard, which was bombed a lot. My Father was a fire warden. But I can’t remember much only being a toddler during the war.
