When war was declared we listened to it on the radio. The rest of the family were quite worried about what it would mean but I was only fifteen and found the whole thing quite exciting. My brother Peter was working down in London as a sign writer but when war broke out he joined the navy. Before he was posted away he brought his fiance home to meet the family. She brought me a pair of nylons and I was so pleased with them. Up until then we had had to put leg make up on and drawn seams down the back with a pencil but this was the real thing. When I put them on I couldn't stop looking down at my legs and admiring them. However the second time I wore them the dog jumped up and laddered them and I shut myself in the room and cried for ages.
