When I was 16 in 1940 I joined the junior Red Cross in the evenings. On a Sunday at Bolton Hall, down Bolton Lane (it used to be where they sent women to recouperate). My friend and I used to go down on a Sunday afternoon for a couple of hours, to make beds and tea for the women. our bit of voluntary work!
We used to have to go down the road to the shleter - as soon as the Ack Ack guns started we made our way down - My father was a tailor. He made my mother and I our first pair of trousers to wear down the shelter!
