Canaries in a Coventry Air Raid

I was staying at my Aunties in Holyhead Road for a few days holiday when this, believe it or not, funny story happened.
When the siren sounded we all went to the local air raid shelter. During the raid a bomb fell close to the house but caused no structural damage but it did cause all the soot in the chimney to fall.
When we entered the lounge the canaries were singing but they were the colour of crow's, ''black as soot'' as the saying goes.
It's amazing how one can find things to laugh about in such a serious situation.
