I recall my mother going out on Christmas Eve to work - I also knew she intended to get me a doll on the way home. However, this was 1940 and Manchester was attacked that night. My mum eventually got the doll, and got home after being manhandled into half a dozen air raid shelters on her journey home.
I remember waiting under the stairs for the air raid to stop. As dolls were not really being manufactured to any significant quality they tended to be ugly! - mine was an ugly doll! The gas works were also bombed the night before, so we had no Christmas dinner till 8pm the next day.
