After I had delivered the medical supplies to the tented hospital we were told that we would be moving to a brick hospital. We evacuated the patients and took the tents down and marched off to our new site.
We paraded on the square in front of the hospital, then we were told our duties. I was in the pre-operations room, and my first patient was a German officer.
Whilst I was writing down his name and rank he said in perfect English 'You English are fools'.
'How do you make that out Sir?'
'I am a reconaissance officer and I was up a tree and was just about to give the order to my artillery to open fire on you when I saw some men climbing up on the roof with a Red Cross flag, so I held my fire. Just then I felt a pain in my right arm and fell out of the tree.'
'For that Sir,' I said, 'You have my heartfelt thanks for the rest of my life.'
