It was the third of September 1939 when the war started. I worked in a factory that produced ammunition. We had a shelter in the garden which we used when the raids started. When the raids became heavier we started to use the underground station as a shelter. We didn't have a lot to eat, our weekly rations were 1 egg, 2 ozs cheese, 2 ozs bacon, 2 ozs sugar. There was no fruit to be seen at that time. We had to queue for everything. We needed a ration book with coupons for food and an ID card. As well as needing coupons for food they were needed for houshold and consumer goods like clothes.

Life was not pleasant, it was scary during the blitz, after the raids we sang songs and enjoyed life to the fullest, as we felt we may not be around tomorrow.

Later my Brothers went to war.

Living through the war was horrible, people got killed and shops were burnt.
