I was born in 1942 and lived in the Meadows area of Nottingham right outside the gates of the Royal Ordnance Factory. Even though I was so young I can remember the cries of "The Yanks are coming!" and lorry loads of American soldiers would drive past the end of the street throwing chocolate and sweets down to us. Through his contacts my father had managed to get hold of a pedal car for me that was an exact replica of a US jeep and I can remember pedalling this car like crazy up to the gates of the factory and being the centre of attention in an admiring ring of G.I's and as a result getting more sweets than the rest of my friends.
