I so wish I had found out more about my father's wartime experiences. This is a brief and possibly inaccurate account of what happened to him in hopes someone will recognise him and can help fill in the blanks - my father was a conscientious objector at the beginning of the war but choosing to serve rather than be imprisoned, he was offered Submarines or Commando training; he took the latter. He trained in Scotland and then served in Africa, was in the invasion of Italy. He spent time in Torre Annunziata and Pozzuoli (always claiming he gave chocolate to Sofia Loren!) and then in the landings, we know he survived in a foxhole above his best friend, who died below him. He thereafter was invalided out to Sicily, to Castellamare del Golfo in particular, where he was sent to "guard" the fishing boats. From here it gets rather hazy - he was also probably smuggling and involved in other unconventional trading activities and lived and worked with the fishermen. He eventually was brought back from Sicily after the war - we are not sure if it was voluntary - and always spoke of his many Sicilian and italian friends.....does anyone remember Cristofo and his fishing buddies?
