I attended the Great Moor County Primary School from 1938 -43.
We were encouraged to bring waste paper to school and some of us started to collect it from houses, shops and in my case from
factories including a cotton mill.We collected tons and tons of it
which filled many sacks in our gardens and at school. The collection became competitive between junior schools in the town and our rivals were the Banks Lane School.
Great Moor won and I was chosen to receive The Salvage Cup ,from the mayor, on behalf of the school.
Perhaps we were the original UK recyclers.
