I trained all the Royal Marines at Scapa Flow until 1943 when I was transferred to Kent on the South Coast opposite Calais. They were expecting problems and I was a small arms instructer and also I went on guard over looking the channel. There was a lot of cross channel shelling from Calais. It was fortunate that we were on top of a cliff so the shells were falling 2 low to do any harm. On several occations we had to shelter under the White Cliffs of Dover to avoid the shelling. While I was there I saw all the preperations for the D-Day Landings.
