I was still at School during the War — Denbigh Road Infant and Junior School
One vivid memory I have was of collecting my Gas Mask from Limbury Infant School with my parents. These masks had to be very carefully fitted with no gaps where gas could seep in.
We carried these masks backwards and forwards to school each day. Pupils who came to school without their masks were sent home again to fetch them
When they were given to us the masks were packed inside an ordinary cardboard box with just a piece of string as a carrying strap..
However these simple boxes soon became what we call today “fashion items” as mothers made various alterations using whatever attractive materials they could find.
Though I didn’t actually see it being built there was an air-raid shelter underneath our playground. The entrances were simply holes in the playground around which nobody had bothered to put railings though there were steps which led down into the shelter. I don’t remember any accidents with pupils falling down the steps but there probably were some as we scrambled down the steps.
