I started work on 4th Sept 1939 which meant that I didn't qualify for the pay I would have done had I started a day earlier!
I worked at Ordance factory in Nottingham until 1943. Any spare time I was in the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ guard. This involved doing guard duty. People don't know but smokescreens lay along the Trent to stop the River Trent shining in the moonlight when bombers were in the sky.
I was 22 when War finished. On V.E day I was at Chattham Barracks and came back to Nottingham quite illegally.
When we went to Ceylon, we went on an aircraft carrier and printed a daily newsletter, which I still have. I was in Ceylon on HMS Fencer for 15 months. I was in maintenance in an area where the Tamils are now. I was demobbed at the end of 1946.
