Chapter 2.
Personal Paragraphs re serving members of the Accountant’s Section.
James Booth Captain in the K.O.Y.L.I. Growing a fine moustache and looks the part. Been in Norway and Iceland and looked quite fit when he visited the office some weeks ago.
Fred Dunhill Sergeant in the R.A. Has trained more A.T.S. than any other member of staff — but is still single!
Ralph Ducker Lt. in R.A. Married and now serving in India.
Robert A. Graham Pilot Officer (R.A.F.) serving with the B.N.A.F. Toured Canada, U.S.A. South Africa and Kenya. Has an offer to return to Canada after the war, but probably room 22 will prove an impediment. Spent his last holiday on the shores of Lake Victoria.
Harry Harris R.A. with M.E.F. A fine “centre-half” for the gunners. Most regular correspondent.
Noel St. George Hyslop "Freddy Bartholomew" has now grown up and returned home from the Middle East.
Fred Jones L/Cpl. in the R.E.M.E. Training at Woolwich - but not for the Arsenal! No doubt auditing spare parts.
John Kendall Sergeant Wireless Operator-Air Gunner with the R.A.F. Training Command in Scotland. Sorry that his wife has become an expert card manipulator but, he can take a “licking”.
J. William (otherwise Transferred to much respected Military Police (?). Been on a course to
Bill) Mann qualify as a Clerk and with the help of a member of the A.T.S. passed with “honors”. Is now a shadow of his former self. May not be “single” long.
Maurice Pickersgill In the R.A.F. and in Canada. Had a serious accident when flying solo, and been in hospital for a long period. Now recuperating but sadly missing his nurse.
Edward Ryder Member of the N..F.S. stationed at Leeds. Always liked a wet wicket!'
Norman Slade A.C.1, R.A.F. In a letter from India which he describes as If the land of bugs, mosquitoes and diseases many" he later adds that “one never fails to be fascinated by the activities of the inhabitants”. Politely put, Norman - but wouldn’t “irritated” be more truly descriptive than "fascinated'? The Slades are well known in India.
Norman Swinden R.A.F. with the M.E.F. Qualifying to be a seaside photographer.
John Shead R.A.F. “Quietly doing his bit".
Lyndon Stakes R.N.V.R. Joined H.M.S. "Norfolk" where he found Neville W;nstanley already on board. Lyndon to his sorrow has discovered that the sea can be rough.
John Southwell R.A.F. Now a Sgt. Navigator; hoping to see Berlin in the “flare-light" shortly. Recently on leave - thanks to fog.
Peter Smith R.N.V.R. Serving on H.M.S. "Lancaster”; A promising "Rear Admiral". Only his youth kept him out of recent Admiralty re-shuffle.
Roy M. Sidebottom Coder in the Royal Navy. Rather different from Coding for Hollerith.
Kenneth Clegg Thornber “The Bishop" is now undertaking very special duties connected with the moral welfare of his Battery.
Frank Tweedale Now serving in India and quite cheerful.
Mabel Todd (Miss) W.A.A.F. - Wireless Operator. At present enjoying Parades at Blackpool.
Kathleen Archer (Mrs.) A.T.S. Anti-aircraft. On a gun-site in North Yorks. Even in the Forces she is
nee Walton aiming high!
Robert G. Williams R.A.F. Fighter Pilot. Waiting to go train-busting. His heart is still in Hollywood.
Neville Winstanley R.N.V.R. “H.M.S. Norfolk”. Had to be posted to a big ship owing to his height. Can now wash clothes.
M. Wood (Miss) A.T.S. Last heard of as a Teleprinter Operator at Leeds. Prefers telephone operating in Room 85.
Jack Wilby R.A.F. Last heard of training as a radio mechanic at Bo1ton, Lancs.
Vera Bagnall (Miss) R..S.M. in A.T.S. (and how!) We hope that when dealing with defaulters she doesn't forget the day when she took the prize for the "high jump" at our Sports! Miss B. is in charge of Machine Accounting Section of the R.E's. Western Command.

Stop press:
Norman Thorpe (audit) complains in a recent letter: “I have been in the Army 4 years to-day, and haven’t seen a ……… German yet!” - That's the spirit!
Frank Micklethwaite - Armourer, R.A.F. called in when on leave. Is very busy dispatching "checks” for the Berliners.
G. Farrer, R.A.F., Navigation Officer (home on leave) thrilled us with first-hand accounts of his personal experiences in the invasion of Sicily and Italy where his main task was to drop "sticks of men” (parachute-troops) in enemy territory.

Au revoir!
May I take this opportunity as I am retiring on the 31st Instant, of conveying to all the boys from the office in the Army, Navy or Air Force, my personal wishes for a speedy and safe return in the near future. Many of you have passed through my hands and perhaps you will forget the failings and remember the virtues, if any. I once read somewhere that "the man who sees things as they ought
to be, is a good deal happier then he who sees them as they are”. May I wish you all success reminding you of the words of George Eliot
“The best augury of a man’s success in his profession is that he thinks it is the finest in the world”.
A.E.P.
As a token of the high regard in which Mr. Pick is held by all members of the department, his colleagues propose to make him a suitable presentation when he leaves the service on the 31st December. Again we wish him continued good health and happiness in his well deserved retirement. Ed.
Type the tripe by “Happy” Day and Company (Room 16)”.
