I was a small child living in Southsea, and one day in early June my mother took me out for a walk to the Ladies Mile.We joined other people who were watching the troops march past in the direction of the South Parade Pier for embarkation. One of the soldiers broke ranks and came over to me, holding out his cupped hands full of coins.
"Here little girl, this is for you, I'm not going to need it any more where I'm going".
Even at that age i understood that he didn't expect to come back: I have often wondered what happened to him.
