My father was licencee of the Cromwell Hotel, Middlesbrough. Every Sunday morning I would help my mother to prepare cheese, cream crackers and pickled onions for the customers. Normally opening time was 12 pm. This Sunday was special: my father had arranged to open the pub at 10.30 am because Neville Chamberlain, the Prime Minister, was making a very special speech on the radio at 11 am and anyone could come and listen to him. The day was 3rd September 1939. I was five and a half years old.
