A 16-year-old boy called Phares Welsh was a messenger in the A.R.P. On a particular night, his mother told him to stay in, but when she went to bed, he slipped out. That night, he was killed in an air-raid shelter along with others in an air-raid. There is a mural in his memory on a wall in Thorndyke Street.
