ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½

I was born and bred in Glasgow and worked as a book-keeper for a timber merchant before the start of the War. My work carried on as usual after the War began until I got married. In those days, women gave up working when they got married and looked after the home. My husband worked in a bank in Greenock and he was called up for service. However, when he went for his medical they would not accept him because he had poor eyesight and he was therefore seconded to the Pay Office in Edinburgh, so we moved there.

There was a lot of ill feeling from people, even members of my own family, that my husband had not gone into the army, whilst their husbands were away fighting, but there was nothing he could do about it and we served out the War in Edinburgh, which I did not find a very friendly place. I was really quite lonely living there. I was very happy when we moved back to Glasgow after the War ended.
