When the war started our shelter for St. Mary's R.C.School was not ready, we used the cellar of an Undertaker on Liverpool Road, not a great prospect! Coffins and slabs but no bodies. We were very pleased when we started using the Shelter in the park in Oxford St.
My Uncle Bill built his own shelter in the garden complete with proper staircase , plastered walls and electric light, this wasn't long after they were converted from gas light to electric so it was something of an inovation.
