In Upper Hill Street in a house, which was four stories high, a mine fell which was next door to a brewery, it went through the roof, ceiling and landed on an armchair on the second floor, unexploded but live. After it was reported to the A.R.P., the police with the help of the army cleared the area for as far as three miles each way, the residents were evacuated to schools and halls in the area within four days. After it was defused we were all back home.
In the local paper that night was a picture of that mine with a trilby on top and a face painted on the front and a pipe in its mouth, people from miles around came to look.
On the wall outside was a poster saying ‘Careless talk costs lives’, in this incident no lives were lost, but the most funny thing that happened, one lady who saw it said “Ho! B Hell, the thing just looks like my feller!�
