My lasting Memory of World War II is…being fitted with a gas mask, having blackout curtains and sticky tape crosses all over the windows. At 9 years old, I was evacuated to Lancaster for 6 months. I was cared for by an elderly couple. Near by a German bomber crashed on the beach and I recall children collecting shrapnel as souvenirs. I spent many nights in the shelters while everyone sang to an accordion to blank out what was happening above and wondering who would have a house to go back to.
