Letter 5 F A Wallace from London, Postmarked 14th November 1940

[Written on headed stationery of Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society

From 59 St Asaph Rd, 10.45 PM
District — Brockley SE4 Date 13-11-1940

My dear Win,
Just a few lines to let you know I am still safe + well. After Monday morning’s excitement things went smoothly although we had 7 raids during the day causing a fair amount of damage in the West End, but we made up for it my having a peaceful might, the all clear sounding at 9o/c, and I went right into bed about 10.30 and had a splendid nights sleep.

The bombs that fell in Waller Rd, killed 9 people and injured 3, they were still looking for a little girl that was passing with her mother at the time, the mother was injured, the husband has been walking up and down for the last 36 hours raving mad.

Tuesday we had only one warning during the day but heard nothing until the warning went at 6.45 in the evening, and he certainly made up for lost time, planes came through one every minute and at 8 o/c he dropped 8 in Brockley between the flats [in Frendsbury Road] and Vesta Rd, one landed on Mantle Rd School again. Brockley Station got one St Norberts several, Skipton House + Turnham Rd School.

We had a lively 4 hours and then a lull until 12 o/c when he [the enemy] dropped a few more heavy ones, however we got down to it and went to sleep the all clear went at 7.45 this morning.

Today we have had two warnings but had nothing drop near, tonight the sirens sounded at 6 o/c but only one plane was heard up till 9.45 when the all clear went after I have finished this letter I am going right into bed as it is a terrible night outside pouring with rain.

I have found Key to you box and when I have a few minutes to spare will have a look through for the things you want. [I don't know to what this refers]

Will now close, God Bless you both and keep you free from harm.

Lots of Love
