During the summer of 1940 I remember playing outside my Oldham home. A burly, khaki-clad soldier came running alomg the pavement. He was armed with a rifle and chasing an escaped barrage balloon which drifted overhead. The soldier fired at the balloon then went round the corner to keep it in view. ( I assume that he had been ordered to bring it down because it was a hazard.)
