in 2005 the former headteacher of the beragh school found a collection of poems written by children at the school during the war - here is one written by Billy Dougherty in 1940

A poem

Hitler is a great big fool
One day he sat upon a
Stool
A pin stuck in it made
Him roar
And he, to bed went feeling
Sore

2

Herr Hitler stayed in bed
Next day
And, while the man
Making hay
Pretended to be sick and
Sore
And thought he’d have to
Work no more

- Billy Dougherty (1-8-40)
