Around 1944 my unti was moving through Italy. The scenes there were terrible. We saw bodies piled up six high at the side of the road, and I could smell and taste death everywhere.

When I was being shipped out I was traveling from Dumfries up to Greenock, where our boat was leaving from. Out train was packed. We stopped at a siding just outside Dumfries, and I said to one of my friends who was with me that I could see my house!

I wanted to run out, over the fields to see my wife and five kids one last time. I was looking out at the house not knowing if I would ever see them again. Luckily I made it home.
