War broke out on 3rd September 1939 and I always thought that that was the day we were evacuated on but I could be wrong. Anyway, if it wasn't 3rd of Septeber it was soon after that most of our school, together with some mothers and babies were evacuated from Birkenhead on Merseyside to Llanidloes in the County of Montgomeryshire ( now Powys ) in Wales
