I was 11 or 12 years old when planes swooped down, from the direction of West Derby road and started spitting bullets. I ran in to my house and a little girl literally flew in to our lobby as the planes went by. The planes headed along to Scotland road. I was amazed I survived, as there was no air raid warning.

In Aubrey Street, in the basements of the houses there were trap doors were you could escape if there was an air raid.

If you heard the whilstening bombs you knew you were ok but if you didn’t you knew you weren’t.

If it was going to be a heavy bombing you could tell by the sound of the plane and you knew that someone wouldn’t be as lucky as you.

My farther was in the tank core of the army but was later discharged through medical reasons. My family survived the war.

When there was an air raid I was running into a shelter when I saw a man in the middle of the road stripping and shouting at the Germans to come and fight him while he was stripped.
