This story was submitted to the People’s War site by Charlotte Compton of Uckfield Community Learning Centre, a volunteer from ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Southern Counties Radio on behalf of Joan Myers and has been added to the site with her permission. Joan Myers fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

In 1941 I was 14 years old living in London, my father got a job in Leicester building aerodrome runways, he was going to be away for a long time and decided to move us up there with him. Although she didn’t live with us my Grandmother Charlotte was also coming with us. The night before we were due to leave, my mother decided that my father should go and collect my grandmother so that we could set off nice and early next morning.

We had no phones to warn Granny Charlotte so that when dad arrived to pick her up she was ready for bed with her things all set for the next day and she didn’t want to go with him. He knew my mother was set on her coming for the night and made her come with him.

In the morning a policeman knocked on the door and told us that Charlotte’s house was bombed in the night and her bedroom completely destroyed, had she stayed at home she would have surely been killed. Needless to say we did not go to Leicester that day. The strange thing was that in Granny’s kitchen she had a dresser and the china in it was barely touched.
