I lived in a small market town on the borders of Shrops/Worcs far away from the violence of the war.It really started in 1938[I was 8yrs old] when to our sleepy town arrived families from Czechoslovakia, we ordinary folk knew little about them. they were housed in an old workhouse a large stone forbidding building in fields away from the town, it had been closed for years. The cchildren were sent to our schooland we were each given a child to look after, my little freind was called Marianne, they spoke no English but we all got along fine,my friends and I would go to the workhouse and play our English games with them. I have often wondered what became of them?
One of my many memories was as a Brownie we were given the job of 'salvage collecting'. We were given a large heavy wooden cart to push pull and hold back around the very hilly lanes to collect tins aluminium pots iron paper etc. all needed we were told to help the war effort. We were 7to11 yr olds but all trying to do our bit!
A few of the many memories of a child in WW2
