This story was submitted to the People’s War site by Catherine Garvie, Learning Project Manager at ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Scotland on behalf of an anonymous female contributor from Darvel in East Ayrshire and has been added to the site with her permission. There were many illegitimate children during the War and I was one of them. My dad was Polish and I was adopted by my natural mother’s brother and his wife. I never knew my father; apparently he was a Polish airman.

I didn’t know that I was illegitimate until I was 12 years old when I found out about my real mum. I saw her once in my lifetime before she immigrated to Australia. She got married out there to an Englishman and had three boys and lived in Perth.

The family didn’t know they had a sister until 2 years ago. Once they found out about the real situation they put an advert in the Sun newspaper and I got in touch with my brothers after 55 years. It was very emotional but it was wonderful to realise that I had an extended family after all that time had passed!
