My Uncle, was serving in the RAF as a air gunner. every now and again he would come home on leave. On one such leave he decided to build or dig an air raid trench in the back garden. The trench was between two apple trees and it was an Ace job.

sometime after he came home which was at the time the German airforce were sending two fighter bombers over at low level and the air warnings were very short.
He heard the sound of german engines and ran out into the garden and dived headlong into the treach. It was filled up to the brime with water!
Since he had dug it no one had thought to drain it out.
