My cousin Gladys was 18 in 1943 and she met a US airman called Ethan Richards who was based at Boreham Airfield. There was a popular song around at the time with a line: "Open the door, Richard" which us kids used to sing everytime he came to the house and knocked on the door.
He was a very rich man, Gladys married him after the War and went to live in the USA. Later on, he paid for my aunt and uncle to visit family in Australia.
