As a small boy of eight years walking to school, I saw a German bomber. Although air raid sirens sounded in broad daylight, I thought it was just a practice. Hearing a plane I looked up and saw a German bomber overhead. In a second, the plane passed out of sight behind the rooftops. It turned out to be a stray bomber from a night raid on Coventry or Birmingham looking for a target for the last of its bombs. It aimed for the gas works but missed. I was told off by an air raid warden who marched me into school.
