I was staying with me grandfather in 39 Standen Road, Southfields, Wandsworth. My father was in the navy. We were in the only house that still had gas. The rest had electric. It was 1943 and I was four.

Me grandfather, dear old soul, brought me a slide projector with Snow White on it. I opened the black out curtains to shine onto the other wall. The Air Raid Warden came down and asked me to close the * light out!

Me being young and simple-minded didn’t take much notice!
