A lady stood in Mansfield Market selling Ice Cream which was very powdery. Stockings would be exchnaged for money from behind the cornets. We heard that the lady had a reputation and had many Bevin Boy 'friends'.
She caught the same bus home as we did. She had a very obvious curvy figure. Buses were utility buses with wooden seats. She always knitted a sweater when on the bus - which we thought was unusual. Not half as unusual as when the bus lurched one Saturday, causing a knitting needle to stab her chest. There was a hissing sound and before our eyes - as we were on facing seats, half of her figure deflated. We were in stiches, so much so that the conducter turned us off the bus. I hoped my parents wouldn't hear about it!
