Having left Lurgan College, I was working for an engineering firm in Belfast which was based along the Stranmillis Embankment. I was attending Belfast Technical College in the early stages of a degree course in Mechanical Engineering whilst working for the engineering firm. I got up at 6am and cycled to work at the engineering firm at Stranmillis, did my day’s work and cycled home, getting back about 6pm in the evening. At that time I was staying with my Aunt, at her house on the Antrim Road, Belfast. I was also playing rugby for YMCA, and training two nights each week. The early starts got a bit too much and so I joined the RAF in the faint hope that my life wouldn’t be so hectic. When I was living with my Aunt out at Bellvue, I cycled in through the middle of Belfast and had great difficulty avoiding getting my bicycle wheels getting caught in the tram lines which were all along my route.
