This took place in 1944.

We picked up 14 Italian soldiers from Cos on our boat. We were taking them to Hyfa away from the German forces that would shot them. We were low on water. The only place to get it was to go to Cyprus. We couldn’t take the soldiers there so we moored outside. I went in to buy water.

We were given 3 sovereigns in case we need them to buy ourselves out. I went in with these and returned with the water. The water cost me 2 sovereigns but I still have the third.
