During dogfights in the sky above us, we would see pilots and bomber crews bale out of their stricken airplanes.
A few would land in the town. If we saw one, we would rush to the Police Station in Lady Well in the centre of Dover. If the person was a German he would be escorted by the ѿý Guard with fixed bayonet. A couple of us would be standing on the other side of the road, left finger under nose, right hand held high and shouting “Adolf, Adolf, for you the War is over”.
One now thinks of the episodes of Dad’s Army and the famous Captain Mainwaring’s remark “Don’t tell him your name Pike”.
