Major William.G.H. Woods was my father, born in 1898, he served in WW 1 - after the war, he joined the Royal Artillary TA at Ardwick Manchester -later to become 252 regt RA -just before the Regiment was about to join the BEF in France, the CO, Colonel Tom Turner, was hospitalised - my father then became OC and took the regiment to France - the regiment fought in the rear guard action before being evacuated from Dunkirk - at home we had heard nothing from him for some time, Dunkirk was then the main point of the action - then on 30th May 1940 there was a knock at the door, a telegram boy stood there, my mum took the telegram, afraid to open it- called me, we sat down fearing the worst - but joy on joy, the message -
" ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ safe and sound - Bill," you can imagine our relief, joy and thanks to God.
Father died in 1967 by natural causes -I still have that Telegram -
I am now 76 and regret that I never spent enough time talking with him about his action experiences - Peter G. Woods.

Peter G. Woods
