I worked at Churchman’s for 4/5 years and I got a paper to say I’d have to go on national service or volunteer. There were several of us in my room and we all volunteered and we went to the land army. We all met on station and went to out our hostel, that was the most isolated hostel in East Anglia. It was at St Margaret’s South Elmham, near Harleston, Norfolk. We were doing hoeing on a sugar beet field, singing away when we heard a plane coming. We looked up, and stared at it and it had a swastika on it, and we said blimey it’s a gerry! So we all left the hoes and ran for the trees. I fell over and they all thought I’d been shot cost the plane was firing. When they plane had gone they all said Joan we thought you’d been shot, but then we all had a good laugh.
