Well, I was in barracks in Folkston in VE Day. When we head that peace had become, we all thought we were going to go home, but we were on post the next day, we went upto the main office, and we were told that we couldn’t get out of the barracks, everybody was rejoicing, but we were told that if we didn’t go back to our huts, we could be done for rebellion, so we all went back and that was the end of it. That was our VE Day!
We were posted the next day and that was the end of it, we were posted, somewhere in the UK, but I can’t remember where because there were so many posts. Before the end of the war I was in Bistor, in the ordinance core in Oxfordshire. When we got home and it was all over, it was all different, it had all quietened and I’d missed it all! But that was being in the army, you did what you were told. I’m still doing what I’m told now!
I enjoyed the army days, I wouldn’t have missed it. You have plenty of friends and mates, you did a lot of hard work, but on the evenings and weekends, you had fun. It’s different to now. I don’t know why, but there was friendship and comradeship. I don’t think those days will come back. That’s all I can say.
