Around about the 'Dunkirk' period, the 2nd Batallion, Northamptonshire Regiment were route-marched along with thousands of troops from a holding batallion through France. The place names and details were unknown to us, but we walked through villages and small towns. The guards had transport between the villages and towns whereas we were left to 'foot-slog' it as best we could. We marched through these towns and villages as smart as we could but they were the show piece. Was this simply for the morale of the French civilians at the time?
We seemed to 'do a loop' inland and then back out to the coast. We landed back at Weymouth. Does anybody else remember this and do they know what the purpose of the tour was? Or do they know any specific place names. The name Bernet (Bernay?) 'rings a bell'.
Upon landing at Weymouth, we were handed postcards by the WVS and we continued our journey onto Quarry Hill Flats, Leeds.
