When the First World War started, my Great Grandad Thompson, and his cousin, my Great Uncle Jack, were that keen to join in the 'adventure' of war, and were under the terrible illusion that it was a noble and honourable act to fight for their country. Both of them lied about their ages, and both joined when they were 15 yrs old. To think of boys of that age fighting in trenches these days is unimaginable, but they did, and many died there. They didn't even think at the time that they might die a horrible death on a bloody battlefield. Fortunately they both survived, and were able to pass on the tales of the horrors, and the shame of war to their children, and hence on to us. Unfortunately, the lesson wasn't learned, and WW2 followed a few short years later, and again many more innocent souls went to a dreadful end, all for the sake of politics and money.
