I was engaged to marry my husband in June 1940 but as a member of the tank core he was called up to be involved in the Dunkirk evacuation and as a result our wedding had to be postponed.

Towards the end of June 1940, probably about a Thursday, I received a call from him at work saying he'd be in the country over the weekend for 48 hours leave. So we rushed around to get everything ready - he got back at 11am on the Saturday and we were married at 2:30pm the same day!

We spent our honeymoon that night standing in a cinema in Nottingham, and then he went the next day!

I had my first child in 1944 and although my husband was there for his birth he didn't see him again for another 2 years.

I also remember, about the time of Dunkirk, that lots of soldiers appeared in Highfields looking to be billeted - lots of residents helped put them up, but we didn't have any space so weren't able to!

I also remember seeing flares from German 'planes - and once during a cinema show in Folkestone we were told that German planes were overhead and that we could leave if we wanted to! We stayed, albeit feeling rather scared.
