When I was about six or seven, we used to have the Germans working mending the roads and my mother made a great big plate of sandwiches and a great big jug of drinking chocolate and she had me take it to them. I was a bit shy but they thanked me. She was a very caring person, my mother, like I am a caring person. She said “They are some mothers’ lads after all and I’m sure their mothers would do the same”. She even bought them some cigarettes one time.
