I used to go tot Trent Bridge School, I was about 12 years old at the time and at Trent Bridge school we were asked to be runners for the ARP. When Nottingham was blitzed, after an awful night I had to report to London Road to the ARP centre. We were hoping to be of use as delivery boys but we weren’t wanted. So we went over Trent Bridge down the side of the Trent watching them trying to get through the concrete of the bakery which had been blown up, they were trying to get to the men who were trapped. As we were only 12 we just carried on as young lads do. We finished up at Trent Pool down ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Road. The Embankment was scattered with incendiaries. While we were there one of the unexploded bombs went off. We were scared then, we were shocked. We weren’t in danger but as kids we had thought we were safe down there.

I was an apprentice at the works on Mandella Road. We’d be in the yards at night when they were getting ready for the bombing raids. It was quite exciting at the same time.
